The Mud Road Revisited

  NEXT
We ended up taking the back way in to The Mud Road and paused at the first trail.

We ended up taking the back way in to The Mud Road and paused at the first trail.   The hill - Devinchi just above the gulley...   Approaching the first outcropping ...   Then climbing it...   Cojo went next - climbing the first rocks...   He got up the first set but started spinning wheels on the second. His daughter didn't seem to mind.   You can sorta see here how the two sets of rocks were - he's between them here.   He couldn't get enough traction so Devinchi got ready to give him a yank from above. I looked in on the kids and they seemed to be fine with the situation. I think this is the best pic of the day.   All it took was a little tug from the Rover and Cojo drove up the rest of the way.   Shad climbing the hill.   We took the trail to the end and turned around. There was a choice between going back down the same hill or taking a sharp left for a more gradual hill. Cojo took the steep hill again.   There was a bit of a drop at the top.   This series gives an idea of the way the topography went - at the top...   Over the first lip...   Between the two sets...   Dropping over the second lip...   Devinchi took the sharp left citing his vehicle weight and poor brakes. He had to make a sharp left over a rock to avoid the trees.   Shad went down the steep way - first lip...   Dropping down the second set...   Down the gully at the bottom...   We had gone through a muddy turn that was a swamp last time. On the way back through, I decided to turn left and cut through some deeper mud. I started out crawling and didn't get too far before I was dug in. Just as I had decided I was stuck and needed a pull, I tried again and rocked and spun my way back out.   My right front tire had dug in a bit.   We worked our way out toward the outer trail - Shad...   Colin....   Before heading out we drove up this cool rock escarpment.

Cojo, Devinchi, Shad and I went wheeling for a few hours off The Mud Road. Cojo also had his son and daughter with him and they seemed to have a good time. We met up at the gas station near the highway and headed out toward the trails. We ended up taking the back way in to The Mud Road and paused at the first trail. I led us down a trail and eventually realized it was the next one I had been thinking of. Dohht! So we turned around and headed out but not before Devinchi got his Rover hung up on a log. I tried to tug him off of it (sadly no pics of my HB towing the Rover!) Well, he eventually got free and we went down the proper trail. I also got hung up on that log and ended up getting free but denting my passenger side door and ripping my rear flare half off in the process. Of course, more scratches too.

All of the places that were so deep in mud and water earlier this year were now mostly dry. We decided to go for the hill that was a problem before and that was drier and not as bad either. It wasn't a snooze, though. At the bottom there was a gulley that we each just avoided by going to our right (last time it was too wet on the side to get traction). After that there are two uneven rock outcroppings to climb, about a trucklength apart. I went up first without incident but forgot to ask someone to take a pic, so it starts with Tim.
