Lost a Wheel on the Highway

  NEXT
Here is where it came to rest..

Here is where it came to rest..   We jacked it up and pulled it apart. Some wheel studs had snapped.   Luckily, it slid on the lower ball joint stud and saved my rotor.   You can see the skidmark in the background. I hit the rail once and bounced.   While Jim and Tanya went for wheel studs, Shad and I started disassembling.   Luckily, between us we had the tools we needed.   Here is what is left of the lower ball joint stud that saved my rotor.   Note that it was ground down past the cotter pin, which was half imbedded in the remaining stud and nut.   The other side for comparison.   Here it is back home. I had pulled the fender out before starting back.   A closeup of the impact area. It could have been worse.

We went to Paragon to do some wheeling. I had put on some tires on Lego rims but didn't have enough of the special lugnuts and foolishly didn't check their torque after wheeling the first day. The next day on the way back to the park, the wheel went flying off at about 65 mph. It sailed across 2 lanes, launched straight up off the median and came back down, narrowly missed another car and then went around the bend out of view. Jim said he saw it flying up in his rearview mirror and hoped it was a spare. Meanwhile, I cut right to keep from flipping, hit the brakes and it dropped and slid, throwing a plume of sparks. I got it over and hit the guardrail, bounced and went another 30 feet or so before coming to rest. Bryan was behind me and stopped. Jim came around again from the next exit. Luckily I had good people with me. While Bryan and I started to break it down, Jim and Tanya went for wheel studs. Thanks to Jim, Tanya and especially Bryan for helping me get back on the road and safely home.
